In this article, we are going to look into the key points to keep in mind while using an Amazon EC2 Spot Instances effectively with instance flexibility. Here we will try to answer the three key questions:

Why is Instance Flexibility needed?

Spot instances are unused EC2 capacity which means the amount of it available in any one specific instance type and size varies over time. So by using more than one instance option you increase the pool of capacity you have access to, achieving greater scale and reducing the impact of any one capacity pool getting interrupted. 

As spot instances are often 70 to 90 percent cheaper than on-demand instances.  You’ll often be able to find more powerful instances and still save a fortune. 

For example, if you needed two vCPUs and four gigs of memory you might choose the c4.large. On the spot that’s a 71 percent discount versus c4.large on-demand.

However, even the m4.large is a 70 percent discount on the spot versus running the c4.large on-demand despite the fact that has two vCPUs and eight gigs of memory.

So hopefully by now, you understand why instance flexibility is so important and agree it is possible to use more than one instance type while saving a fortune.

Management of Spot Instances:

Ways that Spot Instances Provide Flexibility:

  1. Launch Options: Spot Instances can be launched using the AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, or AWS SDKs. This provides users with a variety of ways to manage and launch their instances.
  2. Instance Types: Spot Instances offer access to the same range of instance types as On-Demand Instances, including compute-optimized, memory-optimized, and storage-optimized instances. This allows users to choose the instance type that best meets the needs of their workloads.
  3. Operating Systems: Spot Instances support a wide range of operating systems, including Amazon Linux, Windows, Ubuntu, and CentOS. This allows users to choose the operating system that is best suited for their applications.
  4. Availability Zones: Spot Instances can be launched in any available Availability Zone, giving users flexibility in choosing the location that is closest to their end-users or data sources.
  5. Auto Scaling: Spot Instances can be used with Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling, which automatically adjusts the number of instances in response to changes in demand. This allows users to scale their workloads up or down as needed, while taking advantage of the cost savings provided by Spot Instances.
  6. Integration with Other AWS Services: Spot Instances can be used with other AWS services, such as Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS), Amazon Elastic File System (EFS), and Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3). This allows users to take advantage of a wide range of services to build and deploy their applications.
  7. Flexible Pricing: Spot prices vary depending on supply and demand in the spot market, giving users the flexibility to choose the maximum price they are willing to pay for their instances. This allows users to optimize their costs while still meeting the needs of their workloads.

  • Simplified Provisioning: Select instances, assign weights, specify target capacity for On-Demand and Spot Instances, and build a fleet within seconds.
