A CPU is an abbreviation for Central Processing Unit which is used to run programs, instructions, applications along with the operating systems. CPU is also known as the computer’s brain as it does all the processing tasks. It performs input and output tasks along with mathematical and logical calculations. It also controls and monitors everything in a computer system. It is made up of integrated chips.

Features and Components of CPU

Following are the feature of a CPU:

1. Cache Memory : It is a small sized memory present in the CPU which helps in storing the most frequent instructions so to make the memory access faster. It is faster than RAM and is of 3 types. Three types of cache includes three layers which are Layer 1, Layer 2, Layer 3.

2. Speed: Speed of CPU is a measure by which it is calculated how fast an operation is performed, it is measured in gigahertz or in megahertz. To measure speed internal clock is used and ticks of this clock is counted by the processor to know how quickly instructions are executed.

3. Cores: Cores are special components of CPU which helps in parallel processing means if processor is provided with lots of data and that to be needed to execute simultaneously, in this situation each core independently help in processing information. Now a days different processors are available with multiple cores like dual core, quad core, octa core etc.

4. Bandwidth: It is a measure of communication speed by which different input and output devices communicate with processing unit and vice versa. Different processors have different bandwidths, the processors with high bandwidths are efficient as they do not lag while performing some task.

5. Multi-threading: Processors are built with multi-threading capabilities so that one task can be performed on the main thread whole rest of the calculation is done on the back thread so to provide more efficiency to the processor and reducing freezing of system if some processes takes longer time to complete.

A UPS is an abbreviation for Uninterruptible Power Supply. It is a device which helps the computer in case of a power cut so that the computer does not get turned off immediately, it provides a power supply to the computer to make it run for some time so that the user can shut down the computer after saving any important work which would be otherwise lost due to the power failure.

Features and Components of UPS

Following are the feature of UPS:

1. Output Voltage Regulation: UPS helps in regulation of output voltage in situations when input power supply changes or gets interrupted by any reason.

2. Transition time: Transition time to switch from power supply to UPS supply is negligible and the user will be unaware of the change.

3. Reliability: UPS systems are highly reliable as these helps devices from sudden current changes or unexpected power failure, UPS helps in proper shut down of the devices.

4. Rectifier: Rectifier in a UPS helps in current conversion from alternate to direct current and it also helps in handling power overloads in extreme situations.

5. Static bypass switch: This is a special switch that is present inside the UPS for the safety of the UPS system in case there is any internal system failure.

6. Batteries: Batteries are provided in a UPS system for supplying power in the case when the source power supply fails. Batteries are charged when there is power supply.

Difference between CPU vs UPS Table:

The following table differentiates CPU and UPS:

                                                     CPU                               UPS
CPU stands for Central Processing Unit UPS stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply.
CPU is the main processing part of the computer system without which the computer will not work. UPS is an additional part of the computer system without which the computer will work fine.
It helps in the execution of instructions which are the base of programs. It helps in safely operation of the computer system by providing power supply in emergency situations,
It has an Arithmetic Logic Unit and Control Unit for computation. It is not capable of computation.
It consists of processor cores.  It consists of a battery and inverter.
CPU is more costly than UPS.  UPS is cheaper than CPU.
These are available as single-core, dual-core, quad-core, etc. These are of two types Online and Standby.
