ownCloud is a client-server software suite that allows you to create and use file hosting services. ownCloud is similar to the popular Dropbox in terms of functionality. OwnCloud is mostly server software, whereas Dropbox is primarily client software. (OwnCloud.online is a hosted service for the company.) Because ownCloud’s Server Edition is free and open-source, anyone can install and run it on their own private server for no cost.

History of the Owncloud

In January 2010, the creation of ownCloud was launched with the goal of providing a free software alternative to proprietary storage service providers. What is Nextcloud?

Nextcloud is a client-server software suite that allows you to create and use file hosting services. It’s business-ready and comes with a variety of support options. Anyone can install and run it on their own private server devices because it’s free and open-source software.

When used with its integrated office suite options Collabora Online or OnlyOffice, Nextcloud performs similarly to Dropbox, Office 365, and Google Drive. It can run on-premises or in the cloud. It scales from low-cost Raspberry Pi-based home office systems to full-scale data center solutions that serve millions of users.

History of the Nextcloud

Karlitschek forked ownCloud to build Nextcloud, which was released in April 2016. The majority of ownCloud’s main contributors departed alongside Karlitschek to join forces in the new Nextcloud project, which is administered by Nextcloud GmbH, a new business that was founded at the same time. Within six months, Nextcloud GmbH was profitable, and it is still successful today, with the Nextcloud project under its management.
