Prerequisite: Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)

EDI Analyst :
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is the interchange of information among different entities in a standardized format which may be sent into the same organization or outside organizations (these entities are called trading partners). This interchange is designed by personnel called EDI Analysts. These personnel analyze the need for the information required by the organizations and design, implement and maintain a system to carry out the interchange efficiently. An EDI analyst aside from maintaining the EDI systems also trains the end-users to use the EDI machine.

EDI Analyst Duties and Responsibilities :
EDI analyst also has variations just like the different types of EDI users. EDI analysts should be the most familiar with the organization, and business processes and also must have understood the extent of the EDI software being used. The person mainly provides support to all EDI production processes and develops maps for the trading partners to communicate with the end-users to scale the business.

Also analyzing the business systems, networking configurations, and data storage facilities; Customizing the data exchange across the organization and maintaining it; Taking feedback from the users and developing the machine based on that while also training the end-users.

Salary and Career :
An EDI analyst in the USA on average makes $76,204 per year.
From junior-level EDI analyst a person can get promoted to mid-level EDI analyst and after that he/she can be promoted to senior-level EDI analyst. Generally, senior-level EDI analysts are called EDI specialists. And as compared to EDI analysts, EDI specialists have more salary like they can get up to $90,000 per year.

EDI specialists design and develop a system for the exchange of information. Also, they maintain accurate records of transactions.

EDI analysts/Specialists generally belong with academic degrees in CS, Business, or Information Systems.

Skills required to become EDI Analyst :

  • Proper experience in the business.
  • Understand how the system works in the organization.
  • Knowing about UX designing is a plus.
  • Advanced knowledge of programming languages including C++, Java, XML, SQL, etc.
  • Analytical thinking and troubleshooting skills.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Experienced with being a trainer.
  • And obviously, familiarization with the EDI software.
  • General knowledge of networking protocols.

They commonly use the following tools and techniques

  • Programming languages like Java, C++, XML, and SQL
  • Office suite software like Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • EDI standards like X12 or edifact

The need for an EDI professional really depends on the size of the organization as well as the budget and other resources. Companies find EDI professionals who need someone on site who can constantly be available to monitor information and transactions, especially using the legacy system.
