Commissions in India: An Introduction

  • A commission is a group of people appointed by the government to accomplish a specific task or goal. It can be long-term or specific to achieve a short-term goal. Perpetual commissions are long-term commissions. Ad hoc commissions are commissions charged with carrying out a specific task. 
     
  • Some commissions are permanent,  others time-limited. This latter type is established for a single purpose and expires once its mission is accomplished and its report is submitted to the government.

National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC)  1993 Consider inclusions  and exclusions in the lists of municipalities reported overdue for job reservations and bids as necessary and advise the General Government on these matters
National Commission on Cattle  2002 To recommend ways to improve cattle conditions in India
National Commission for Women (NCW) 1992 To protect and promote the interests of women in India
Competition Commission of India (CCI)  2003 To enforce ‘The Competition Act, 2002’ all over India
Telecom Commission  1989 To deal with various aspects of telecommunications
National Statistical Commission (NCS)  2005 To reduce the problems faced by statistical agencies regarding the collection of data
Election Commission (ECI)  1950 To administer the election process all over India
Law Commission  1834 To reform the law for promoting justice in society
Finance Commission (FCI)  1951 To recommend the distribution of the finances between the centre and the states
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)  1993 To protect and promote human rights
University Grants Commission (UGC)  1956 To give recognition to universities in India, disburse funds and maintain standards in university education
National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST)  2004 To protect and develop the condition of STs in India.
National Forest Commission   2003 To review and assess the existing forest policy
Central Water Commission (CWC)  1945 To manage schemes for control, conservation, and utilization of water resources throughout the country
Commission for Additional Sources of Energy  1981 To formulate and implement policies and programmes for the development of new and renewable energy
National Flood Commission 1976 To provide a coordinated, integrated, and scientific approach to the flood control problems in the country.
Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC)  1956 To plan, promote, organize, facilitate and assist in the establishment and development of khadi and village industries in rural areas.
Staff Selection Commission (SSC)  1975 To recruit staff for various posts in the Ministries and Departments of the Union Government.
Administrative Reforms Commission (ARC)  1966 To give recommendations regarding the public administration system of India.
Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)  1926 Organization of examinations for appointment to the services of the Union Direct recruitment through the selection process.

Nanavati Commission 2000   To Investigate the 1984 anti-Sikh riots
Narendran Commission 2000  To study and report on the representation of Backward Classes in the State public services.
National Commission to review the working of the Constitution  2000  It suggested changes in the electoral laws, setting up a national judicial commission for appointing judges and election of the Prime Minister by Lok Sabha.
Nanavati-Mehta Commission 2002  To probe the Godhra train burning incident and the post-Godhra carnage
Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities  2004  To look into various issues related to Linguistic and Religious minorities in India
Liberhan Commission  1992  To investigate the destruction of the disputed structure Babri Masjid
Shah Commission  1977  It inquire into all the wrongs committed during the Indian Emergency.
