Mica

Mica is the name given to a collection of metals with similar chemical and physical properties. All the minerals in mica are silicate metals. Mica is also known as sheet silicates as individual mica crystals can be split into many thin elastic sheets or plates. Mica is commonly found in Igneous and Metamorphic rock. The quantity of mica is more in granites, schists, and pegmatites.

The mica group consists of 317 minerals. All these minerals are crystalized in a monoclinic system. All these minerals are similar in structure but differ slightly in chemical composition.  Mica’s value is based on the physical properties of the crystal. Mica has been widely used in India even since ancient times. The insulating properties of mica have promoted the use of mica as insulation in the electronic industry. China is currently the largest producer of mica.

Mica Producing Areas

Mica is produced in various places in India like in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

Mica is found in various places like Anantapur District, East and West Godavari District, Khammam District, Krishna District, and Nellore District, Pegmatites are present in ramasagaram. A good quantity of mica is present in Kannaram. Large quantities of mica are present in Kancharlagudem. Andhra Pradesh is currently the largest producer of mica in the country. The mica mines of Nellore are 100 kilometers long and 25 kilometers wide. The mica obtained from these mines is light green and stained and spotted. Shah mines have the deepest mica reserves at 300 meters in depth. Andhra Pradesh produces almost 72 percent of the total mica in India.

Rajasthan comes second in the production of mica in India. Mica production in this state is 15.6 percent of the production of India. The mica mines are present in Jaipur and extend to Udaipur. The mines are 322 kilometers with 96 kilometers in width Bhilwara, Sikar, Dungarpur, Jaipur, Tonk, and Ajmer are the major mica production districts in India. When Jharkhand and Bihar were a combined state the production of mica from the place was high but after the states split, most of the mica reserves were allocated to Jharkhand and Bihar lost all the mica reserves. Both states combined produce around 9 percent of the total mica in India. Mica is mostly found in the eastern parts of the Gaya district. The mica produced in this region is high-quality ruby. Mica production centers in this place are Koderma, Dhabi, etc. Deposits of mica are present in Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh but the quantity is very less and cannot be extracted economically.
