An ore is a naturally occurring rock that contains a high amount of valuable or important minerals. Ores mostly contain metals. A rock can be considered an ore only if metal can be extracted from it profitably. Ore is extracted from the earth through mining, once it is mined then it is treated and refined to remove all the unwanted impurities. Treatment or refining through smelting. Ores are priced based on quality. The quality of ore is measured in grade. If the concentration of metal in ore is more than the grade is high.

Most of the metals known to man today are extracted from the earth’s crust. It is very rear that the metals are freely present in the crust. They are mostly found in the form of alloys or ores with other metals and gases. Ore with a high concentration of the metal that can be extracted profitably is known as metallic ores. Some of the common examples of metallic ores are iron ore, copper ore, Zinc ore, etc. the cost and profitability of ore even depend on the availability and use of that ore.

Metallic Ores

Metallic ores are present in all kinds of rocks and even some types of soil. Metallic minerals are concentrated into rich masses by various processes like erosion/weathering, hydrothermal and Igneous processes. Metals like iron, nickel, and platinum are mostly present as sulfide ores and are present in cooling magma. Metallic ores are mostly located in igneous rocks and metamorphic rocks.

Major usable iron ore reserves are found in Australia, Brazil, China, India, Russia, Ukraine, Iran, etc. The total useful and recoverable reserves of iron ore in India are around 9,602 million tons of hematite and 3,408 million tons of magnetite.

Copper ore is found in many countries. Among all the countries Chile is the largest producer of copper. South America has the highest copper ore reserves in India. Peru is the second largest copper producer in the world followed by China. The largest copper-producing countries in the world are  Chile, Peru, China, Congo, and the USA, these countries contribute to 60 percent of the total copper production in the world.

The total Zinc produced in the year 2020 is 12 million tons. China is the largest producer of Zinc and contributes to 35 percent of the world’s production. The highest Zinc reserves are found in Canada. Considerate zinc reserves are found in the following countries Russia, Australia, Peru, China, and the United States.
