From the previous article, we have seen that API can be used to insert, update or delete a playlist. Now the question comes that once we have created a playlist, do we have to go to Youtube and manually add the video to the newly created playlist. NO!!! all you have to do is use the OAuth Credential and just know the playlist Id to add the video to the Playlist.

We can find the playlist Id for a specific playlist that we want to work with. Well, the answer is- There are two ways to find the Id:

  1. First way is to use the code that we have discussed in previous article to list all of your playlist. This will generate the list of playlist that you own, also mentioning the Id along with the name.
  2. Second way is to login into your Youtube Account. Go to desired playlist, click on it and click on the share option. This will show you the playlist Id.

Since all this requires user authorization, so we will be first creating OAuth Credential.
Before adding video, we will see how to list the contents of a playlist using the code.
Follow the steps below to generate a Client Id and a Secret Key.

  1. Go to Google Google Developers Console and Click on Sign In in the upper rightmost corner of the page. Sign In using the credentials of the valid Google Account. If you don’t have a google account, setup a account first and then use the details to Sign In on the Google Developers Homepage.
  2. Now navigate to the Developer Dashboard and create a new Project.
  3. Click on Enable API option.
  4. In the search field, search for Youtube Data API and select the Youtube Data API option that comes in the drop down list.
  5. You will be redirected to a screen that says information about the Youtube Data API, along with two options : ENABLE and TRY API.
  6. Click on ENABLE option to get started with the API.
  7. In the sidebar under APIs & Services, select Credentials.
  8. At the top of the page, select the OAuth consent screen tab. Select an Email address, enter a Product name if not already set, and click the Save button.
  9. In the Credentials tab, select the Create credentials drop-down list, and choose OAuth Client Id. OAuth is generally used where authorization is required like in the case of retrieving liked videos of a user.
  10. Select the application type Other, enter the name “YouTube Data API Myvideos”, and click the Create button and click OK.
  11. Click on Download button to the right of the client Id to download the JSON file.
  12. Save and rename the file as client_secret.json and move it to the working directory.

Install additional libraries using the pip command:

pip install --upgrade google-auth google-auth-oauthlib google-auth-httplib2

Code to list the Playlist Items:

        # will be a property in that object.

Output:
When you will execute the code you will be asked for the authorization code. For getting the code you need to follow the link mentioned in the command prompt screen above the line: Enter the Authorization code.

Now follow the link and copy paste the authorization code that you will get by granting the permission.

For the convenience we have set maxResults parameter to 3. Otherwise, totalResults count is 32. This means that the enquired playlist consist of 32 videos.

Code to Insert a Video: This example show how to insert a video to a playlist. The id, snippet.resourceId.kind and snippet.resourceId.videoId are the required attributes.
Before adding a video to the required playlist, we will first upload the video to the youtube channel and then we will assign the video to the desired playlist using the Video Id. Please follow the steps mentioned in the Youtube Data API Videos | Set-3 article for uploading the video. For reference, I have used the same code and uploaded the same video to the Youtube Channel.

As you can see the video is added to the playlist. If you will run the code discussed above to list all items in a mentioned playlist, You will see that the totalResults parameter now has value 33.
